hope for the hopeless

“Reserving judgments is a matter of infinite hope." (7, Fitzgerald)

This single line represents what Nick lived by. This was the one thing he was purely good at: not judging people no matter what the situation may be. This quote means one thing and one only thing, it means that one should not judge another, because people can change. It says not judging someone is a matter of hope, this means that one can hope forever that another is capable of change. To judge someone means that one has made up their mind about a person and believes that the other has no hope or opportunity to change and become a better person. To never judge someone means that one is giving the opportunity and the benefit of the doubt to another in hopes that they can change or they can justify their wrong.
In the story The Great Gatsby Nick portrayed a character who was in no way judgmental. This does not mean he did not have opinions about people, it simply means he did not judge or criticize people for the decisions they made. Nick was a man who was trusted with many secrets but at no point did he think that one was at fault for having those secrets. He was a man of few words and even fewer critics. This quote perfectly describes the kind of man Nick was. He was a man who hoped for the best from everyone and refused to give up on any one despite the fact that they have cheated, lied, stole, or anything along those lines. This single line can be the only eight words used to describe Nick and his feelings towards people and judgment.

  1. Talar, I really enjoyed the quote that you had picked throughout the whole story. You explained in detail what rules Nick follows under, and how he has been taught at a young age to not judge anyone. I also liked how you explained that Nick did not judge anyone throughout the story, even though they are the types of people that should be judged. Wonderful job Talar!! Keep on Writing!!

  2. This was truly one of the best quotes in the entire book! It is fascinating what one sentence, or couple of words, can say about a person. Your breaking down of the quote into its meaning, significance, purpose and setting made the topic so easy, that even a second grader can understand!

  4. I actually had not yielded a great deal of attention to this quote throughout my odyssey across the novel's pages. Seeing how simple and comprehensible this line is, I now know that I should have been more attentive. While I grasp Fitzgerald's intentions behind this line, I am also able to empathize with another viewpoint: bearing judgments is also a matter of infinite hope. Judgments do not necessarily need to have negative connotations. I can, for example, presume that a person is veritably kind and understanding even without knowing said person entirely. This judgement is fed by infinite hope that the [positively] judged individual is actually kind or understanding and will remain that way in the future or behind an assumed persona.

  5. Talar, your blog was incredible and helped me understand Nick Caraway’s personality better than before. You chose an amazing quote which most people had already forgotten about, but I’m glad you did not because it truly is a remarkable saying with so much meaning behind those couple of words. Great job!

  6. Talar, I do have to agree with you because this is actually one of the best quotes in this book. Once someone decides to keep their rude or possible neutral confession to themselves, then there is a fine line of hope for the opposite person. Nick was a smart person for keeping his judgments and knowing all the secrets that everyone was trying to keep. Being trusted in this world is very important. You wrote smoothly and completely captured Nick's true thoughts and feelings.
